While we often associate winter with cosy evenings by the fire and snowy winter walks, for businesses, it's a time when motivation could drop and people are distracted by the upcoming festivities, not to mention the post-holiday blues. As a business, have you considered how you plan on combating these end of year obstacles? It may seem like an uphill battle, but the colder months are a great opportunity for those businesses willing to make these things part of their thinking and planning.

  • Team Building and Collaboration: With a lot of companies finishing up projects or delivering on targets before December, it’s easy for the emphasis to be on the deliverables and not the team. Companies can leverage this by incorporating team-building exercises and collaborative projects into their L&D programs, fostering stronger relationships and enhanced teamwork.

  • Injecting Seasonal Themes: To keep learners engaged and motivated, consider incorporating seasonal themes into your L&D programs. Winter-themed competitions, challenges, or even festive learning activities can add a touch of fun and relevance to your initiatives.

  • Flexibility in Scheduling: Winter weather brings with it limited daylight hours and often results in disruptions to daily routines. Companies should respond by offering more flexible scheduling options during this season. This flexibility allows individuals to adapt their learning activities to the unpredictable challenges posed by shorter daylight hours. Studies have shown that the brain has an enhanced ability to learn during daylight hours compared to darkness, so make sure you’re scheduling programs in the middle of the day, not first thing or last thing in the afternoon.

Consider increasing your stress management workshops or courses on maintaining physical and mental health during the winter months to combat this potential spike. 

  • Holiday Planning: Last but not least, it's important to acknowledge that winter encompasses several holidays and breaks. Companies should take into account that learners may have limited availability during these periods and plan their programs accordingly. This ensures that L&D efforts remain aligned with employees' personal and family commitments. So remember to spread out your offering to accommodate for an increase in annual leave.
