What Does Meaningful Action Look Like For Us During Pride Month (and Beyond)?
Pride Month, celebrated every June, is a time for the LGBTQ+ community and allies to honour the progress made toward equality, recognise the ongoing struggles, and celebrate the diversity and resilience of the community. For corporations, it presents an opportunity to show support and commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and to recognise those in your organisation as unique individuals with rich skills and experience. As a team, we’ve been discussing ways that we can support during Pride Month and how we participate with genuine and meaningful actions, so we thought we’d share some of our ideals, areas of focus and thinking in case it’s helpful to you and your organisation.
Understand the History and Significance of Pride
Before embarking on any Pride-related initiatives, it’s important to educate ourselves about the history and significance of Pride. Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Riots of 1969, a pivotal event in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Understanding this context helps us appreciate the deeper meaning behind Pride and avoid trivialising it. Training programs, workshops, and educational resources for employees can foster a deeper understanding of LGBTQ+ issues and history.
Develop Inclusive Policies and Practices
Authenticity starts from within. Let’s ensure our policies and practices reflect genuine support for LGBTQ+ rights. This includes:
Non-Discrimination Policies: Implement and enforce policies that protect employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression.
Health Benefits: Provide comprehensive health benefits that cover the specific needs of LGBTQ+ employees, including mental health support and coverage for gender-affirming treatments.
Inclusive Work Environment: Foster a culture of inclusion where LGBTQ+ employees feel safe, respected, and valued. This can be achieved through diversity training, employee resource groups (ERGs), and creating a visible support network.
Engage in Year-Round Support
Supporting LGBTQ+ issues should not be confined to just the month of June. Year-round engagement demonstrates genuine commitment that can look like:
Sponsoring LGBTQ+ Events: Support and sponsor LGBTQ+ events, such as Pride parades, workshops, and community programs, throughout the year.
Partnerships with LGBTQ+ Organisations: Collaborate with and donate to LGBTQ+ nonprofits and advocacy groups to support their ongoing efforts.
Internal Initiatives: Implement internal initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion, such as mentorship programs, career development workshops, and regular diversity audits.
Use Your Platform for Advocacy
Some of us have significant influence and reach. Using this platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights can drive meaningful change. This includes:
Public Statements and Campaigns: Make public statements supporting LGBTQ+ rights and launch campaigns that highlight LGBTQ+ stories and issues.
Advocacy for Policy Change: Support legislative efforts that advance LGBTQ+ rights, such as anti-discrimination laws, marriage equality, and healthcare access.
Education and Awareness: Use company platforms to educate customers and the broader community about LGBTQ+ issues, history, and the importance of inclusivity.
Involve the LGBTQ+ Community
When planning Pride initiatives, make sure LGBTQ+ voices have a seat at the table to ensure an authentic and relevant voice. This looks like:
Consulting with LGBTQ+ Employees: Engage LGBTQ+ employees in the planning and execution of Pride-related activities. Their insights and experiences can guide more authentic and impactful initiatives.
Collaborating with LGBTQ+ Creatives: Partner with LGBTQ+ artists, designers, and influencers to create Pride campaigns and products that resonate with the community.
Feedback Mechanisms: Establish channels for feedback from the LGBTQ+ community and use this input to improve and refine your efforts continuously.
Avoid Rainbow-Washing
Rainbow-washing, or the practice of superficially adopting LGBTQ+ symbols for marketing purposes without meaningful action, is widely criticised and can backfire. To avoid this consider the following:
Transparent Communication: Be transparent about the intentions and goals behind your Pride initiatives. Explain how your actions contribute to supporting LGBTQ+ rights.
Consistency with Values: Ensure that your support for LGBTQ+ rights aligns with your company's values and actions. Avoid contradictory practices, such as supporting anti-LGBTQ+ politicians or policies.
Genuine Engagement: Focus on genuine engagement rather than tokenistic gestures. For example, instead of just changing your logo to a rainbow for Pride Month, pair it with tangible actions like donations to LGBTQ+ causes or highlighting LGBTQ+ voices.
Measure Impact and Accountability
To ensure your efforts are effective, establish metrics to measure the impact of your initiatives and hold your company accountable. This can include:
Tracking Progress: Regularly track and report on the progress of your diversity and inclusion initiatives, including specific goals related to LGBTQ+ support.
Impact Assessment: Evaluate the impact of your Pride initiatives on the LGBTQ+ community and use this feedback to improve future efforts.
Third-Party Audits: Consider third-party audits or certifications to validate your company’s commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion and hold your organisation accountable to external standards.
Celebrate and Amplify LGBTQ+ Voices
Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate and amplify LGBTQ+ voices. With the participant's consent and support, companies can:
Highlight LGBTQ+ Employees: Share stories and experiences of LGBTQ+ employees through company platforms, showcasing their contributions and journeys.
Support LGBTQ+ Creators: Promote and collaborate with LGBTQ+ artists, writers, and content creators to highlight their work and perspectives.
Customer Engagement: Encourage customers to share their Pride stories and experiences, creating a community of support and celebration.
Navigating Pride Month with authenticity requires a deep commitment to understanding, supporting, and advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. By embedding inclusivity into our core values, policies, and practices, we can make a meaningful impact not just in the workplace but in the macro environment too. Authentic support goes beyond rainbow logos and slogans; it involves year-round engagement, advocacy, and genuine efforts to create an inclusive environment for all. After all, Pride Month is about celebrating and recognising the many facets of the LGBTQ+ history and modern-day community, so let’s do what we can to educate ourselves, amplify LGBTQ+ voices and keep the focus on the community this month and about the things we should be doing beyond this month as well.
